LIC. MAYAHUEL GUTIÉRREZ  |  Bariatric Pshycology 

Psychological support has a very important role in the interdisciplinary treatment of a patient. Lic. Mayahuel Gutiérrez, expert in the management of obese and overweight patients, collaborates actively with Obesity Care Group to offer psychological treatment to patients and help them change their lifestyle, their food intake habits and other psychopathologic conducts associated with this disease. 

Graduated of Psychology Degree at Universidad Autónoma de Durango, with the thesis “Psychological Intervention in the Bariatric Surgery”, Dr. Gutiérrez was always interested in the treatment for obese patients, which motivated her to study a Degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy in the same university.

Her formation in this specialty continues with the Diploma Course in Bariatric Psychology certified by the IIECS (Instituto de Investigación y Educación en Ciencias de la Salud) and the Mexican College for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases (CMCOEM) at Hospital Angeles del Pedregal, Mexico D.F.

Besides performing private practice since 2009, she has been part of the Obesity Clinic at Hospital Sanatorio Español in Torreón, in which she gave psychological port-surgery monitoring to bariatric patients,  She is currently collaborating in Obesity Care Group and also serves as psychologist in the Mexican Ministry of Health Sanitary Jurisdiction N° 6. 

Working and Teaching Experience 

  • 6 years of experience in Psychology with a focus on obese and overweighed patients.  
  • Experience and formation particularly in the area of Obesity at Obesity Care Group, as well as in other regional obesity clinics.
  • Speaker at diverse Psychology and Nutrition congresses at Universidad Juárez del Estado de Durango (UJED), with topics on specific bio-psycho-social problems of overweight people and quality of life of patients with obesity, diabetes and stress.
  • Speaker at diverse courses related to self-esteem, psychological conducts, violence as well as organizational leadership for different companies.
